Psychologist Michael Pearlman and his colleague conducted a study called the Vocalic Iconicity Challenge. They asked researchers interested in language evolution to come up with different sounds, only using the human vocal apparatus. The winning entries were actually quite really easy to get the meaning of. So what this suggests is that although gestures seem like an easy way of coming up with ways of expressing yourself, we can also do it using our voice as well.
