Evangelicalism is very mixed in its understanding of how to engage publicly. The NAE made a resolution in 1956 calling evangelicals to lead in what was then known as the human rights movement, equal dignity regardless of race. In 1960, by and large, the NAE did not show up for the civil rights movement in any consistent way.
