Is There a Nathan Figure in Joseph Smith's Death?
I feel like that is exactly what we are witnessing in the sad end of joseph smith's life, as he continued to avoid his shadow. I'm going to just throw out an idea that none other than oliver cowdery may have tried to be joseph's nathan figure. Joseph thereafter left for a few days with frederick williams,. during which time oliver wrote and published something called the articles on marriage, denying polygamism. This article was presented and accepted by the church in Smith's absence. The essential component of this experience is not the absence of a sense of sin or imperfection, but the unwillingness to tolerate that sense.
