The Origins of Language

The French language has a huge accumulation of and prejudice, particularly mediaeval latin. It acts as a kind of shield against too much disintegrating influence by reason trying to make its way in from without. This is precisely the kind of defence which bert put up for prejudice and for superstitions. These are the things to cling on to. If we strip off the bark, no matter how unsightly it may appear, the tree will perish. And this is the great defence of tradition, superstition, prejudice, irrationality and gatys.
