Anxiety and the Paternal Function
The goal of the paternal function is to intrude on this imaginary triangle, subtract the phallus and all of the desire games that the child plays with the maternal figure. The effect looks something like this: Do you see what I'm doing? I am opening up a gap for a space between the child and the primary caregiver. When Lacan uses the word anxiety, you can substitute it for what British object relations folks refer to as impingement.
