Emma speaks with Cole Stangler, France-based journalist covering politics, housing, and labor, author of the book Paris Is Not Dead: Surviving Hypergentrification In The City Of Light, to discuss the recent developments in French politics after a vote of no-confidence against Prime Minister Bernier. Then, she speaks with Katie Way, writer & editor at Hell Gate, to discuss the recent acquittal of Daniel Penny. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel’s land grab in Syria and food blockade on northern Gaza, Syria’s interim leader, Luigi Mangione’s manifesto, Trump’s cabinet nominees, the Kroger-Albertsons merger, Saudi Arabia’s FIFA World Cup, and Gottheimer’s governor chances get wrapped, also watching Matthew Miller continue to obscure US support for Israel’s unhinged imperialism with a smirk. Cole Stangler then joins, first catching us up to date on France’s unraveling government since his last appearance, with Macron following through with his refusal to name a left-wing Prime Minister despite the New Popular Front’s (NFP) electoral victory this summer, instead naming Republican Michel Barnier in September, leading to months of a floundering, incompetent administration largely held hostage to the far-right until a successful no-confidence vote against Barnier this past week, forcing Macron, once again, to name a Prime Minister. After expanding on the non-Macron-aligned relevant parties involved, with Marine Le Pen’s National Rally on the far-right and a multi-party coalition between the Socialists, Greens, Communists, and Jean-Luc Melancon’s LFI, Stangler wraps up with the ideal candidates for the Prime Ministership from the left. Katie Way then walks Emma through the evolution and eventual decision in the acquittal of Daniel Penny over his killing of Jordan Neely on the NYC subway system, with the prosecution emphasizing the diagnosis of asphyxiation as the cause of death and Penny’s lack of remorse toward and consistent attacks against Neely during interviews, while the defense’s ultimately successful argument hinged on pinning his death on drug abuse and sickle cell disease – a tact often employed by cops, as seen with the murder of George Floyd – and spinning witness accounts and the coroner’s report as the result of “political pressure.” After expanding on the ultimate decision to acquit Penny, Way and Emma step back as they unpack the greater narrative built around this case, with many elites and people on the right coming to the defense of Penny with general anti-homeless and anti-immigrant fear-mongering, zeroing in particularly on Eric Adams’ and his Administration’s use of this story to bolster his police-driven plan to solve (jail) New York City’s unhoused problem (people), as they wrap up the interview with the growing frustration around safe-blue state Democratic Parties’ failure to provide progressive alternatives to conservative fear-mongering around crime and homelessness. And in the Fun Half: Emma unpacks the major optimism from the business community about Trump’s impending administration as she watches Lina Khan’s killer appearance with Hasan before watching Scott Jennings put his fascism on full display when addressing the acquittal of killer Daniel Penny and the charging of killer Luigi Mangione.
