Jefferson and the Constitutional Convention
In the 1790s, slavery gets moved to the back burner for Thomas Jefferson. He became convinced that Hamilton and his party, the Federalists, were really secret monarchist counter-revolutionaries who wanted to undo all of the liberties we had gained as a result of the war for independence. In 1807, he asked Congress to send him a bill that would make it illegal for people from Africa to be kidnapped and carried in chains across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States. And so on January 1, 1808, finally, the international slave trade was outlawed in the U.S.
