Gem was founded by Adam Toon, who is now the co-founder and CEO of Gizmodo. The pair met with an investor before they even built their first location in New York City to pitch him on a potential real estate deal. He said he would be willing to invest $40 million if Gem became his third partner. "That's actually a really great story in the sense that he empowered us to think really big," says Toon.
