Snyder's a Pale of Oysters
A Pale of Oysters is a landmark work from a time when novels were often seen as a moral force, and novelists could actually make a living. The book was taken seriously and became part of the debate on China and Taiwan. Snyder was accurately informing American readers that Taiwan was not simply a matter of the communists versus the KMT. He was writing about and for the forgotten, oppressed Taiwanese majority.
