The Rise and Fall of Edison
Edison envisaged the phonograph as principally for business, a sort of early dictating machine. But along with many others, he has realized its entertainment potential too. Phonographs are very expensive, costing $100 or more so that only the wealthy can afford them. By the time technological improvements lower the cost, Edison has made a serious misjudgment. He concentrates his efforts on encouraging his employees to record the voices he thinks are best suited to the technology,. rather than recording acts people most want to listen to.
