The Importance of Synthetic Biology
With synthetic biology, you can kind of go back to a more engineering approach in that you can go down to the sort of the simpler parts and build them up from that perspective. As an engineer, you're making something completely new. I am just stunned by the quality of work going on around the world dissecting things like how could you get something that's basically from the Sigma catalog to make a cell? And 90% of the time, these are people I have never heard of. So it's amazing how fast the fields moved, what we're able to do that we certainly couldn't do 10 years ago or 20 years ago.
