The idea of homeostasis goes back to the physiologist Walter Cannon at the turn of the 20th century. Allostasis is literally defined as attempting to anticipate the needs of the body and meet those needs before they arise. It's a very reactive model of how things work, so there's a change and then the brain responds to that change by attempting to return to the set point.
