In the 19 eighties, where i grew up, everybody worked in nationalized industry. My dad went from being a coal miner and a british coal to being a hospital porter on the lower wrong of the economic ladder. The only reason i got to go to saint andrews because my local education authority, county durham, paid for me to get that education. And then i went to harvard because i got scholarship. I did what i did because of massive amounts of support, either from the local education authority or later, from grants and fellawships. Thare was support network.
