What Is Malen's Model?
Michael Greenbow is back to answer your questions. He will go into a bit more depth or at least clarify some things that have come up from listeners and questions that hit me actually that night after the interview. Malen's model is basically a very simple way of conceptualizing how a psychological symptom results from an emotional conflict. There are three points on it, obviously. One is the natural feeling that a person would feel what any person might feel in a given situation. The next point is the threat or the painful emotional consequence associated with that natural feeling. And then the third point is the defense, which is something that gives expression to the natural feeling while avoiding the painful emotional consequences.
