Daryl is still curious about Roger's perspective and how it might answer the question Daryl's been asking for decades. When you're sitting there one on one with somebody, it's hard to hate them. So when he's done radiating all this vitriol, his wall has come down because I haven't pushed back. He wants to know, how do I feel about him verbally attacking me? Instead of going on the offense, I go on the defense. And at the end of the day, what happens here is that we reflect our actions onto each other in a way that makes us better people.
We’re revisiting some of our listeners’ favorite episodes this summer. We kick off the series with our first ever episode: A conversation with the Black jazz musician Daryl Davis. During a performance, a member of the KKK approached him at a bar and his life took an unexpected turn. He ended up inspiring hundreds of people to leave white supremacist groups.
If you enjoyed this episode, Maya suggests you check out this one next: “Leaving a Religious Cult”
We’ll be back with new episodes in the fall. In the meantime, you can connect with Maya on instagram @DrMayaShanker.
