The Importance of Character Promises

When you're writing a book, one of the things to remember is that the book is a way to hack the brain. And so when people are picking it up, they're picking it up to produce a specific emotional state themselves. That's why the promise that you're making is so important. In the first third of your story, you really should establish what kind of arc your character is going to have.
