Purgatory - A Realization of the End Towards Which We Progress
Purgatory helps us to better understand this attaining to perfection which awaits us in the life to come. In purgatory, you can think about it as a kind of organic, sacramental, non magical realization of the end towards which we progress. It's not as if, ok, you tried some on earth and know, magically youare in heaven. Rather, you know, you co operated or consented to the grace of god on earth to such an extent. And so this informs the kind of catholic practice of penance.
