Dr. Marlon Polly writes about the Telugu mass conversion in his book, "Rupture continuity or uplift" He says it took Protestants missionaries by surprise when Dalits and tribals made a collective decision to become Christians. The conversions were carried out during times of famine so that they could receive aid from missionary agencies. In another section he looks at how John Cloe incorporated members of Madiga communities into his work projects on behalf of Mala people.
