CHAPTER

The Vision of Tundal

The vision of Tundal was written down in around 1149 by the Irish monk Marcus at the Scots monastery in Regensburg. It tells the story of a notoriously unscrupulous man who falls unconscious one day during dinner and is shown a vision of the afterlife. An angel guides him through numerous scenes of hell and finally shows him a glimpse of heaven. Beholding the dreadful punishments suffered by sinners, Tundal repents of his previous conduct and embraces a virtuous life.
