The Mona Lisa and the Monuments Men
The Mona Lisa may have been stolen by the Nazis during World War II. Hitler wanted to build a museum in his hometown of Lance, Austria that would be stocked with important works of art. Noah Charney estimates about 5 million objects were stolen during WWII. The only surviving Louvre documents state that the Leonardo painting had been crated up on August 27, 1939 and was listed as being sent out to one of five Chateau around France for safekeeping.
