The History of the Orkney Islands
Orkney and Shetland were given to Scotland as security for Princess Margaret's dowry. If that money was not paid, the islands would then become Scottish. In 1472, the financial dispute was finally settled, and Orkney formally annexed to Scotland. The islands ceased to be under Norwegian control and became integrated into the Kingdom of Scotland. When Scotland joined with England to form the United Kingdom, the Orkney Islands joined as well.
