All of the house elves, Dobby and Winky included all of them are absolutely acting out of fear. They want to do everything right because they know what happens if they don't. It's really hard to read the way they harm themselves in the context of all that. But one of the things about resistance is that when we see oppressed populations, there are always movements and moments of resistance.
