The Puritans clamped down on modest women in the 17th century. Single mums are being whipped by the 1630s, abortion is made punishable by death. The pendulum of female modesty is swinging in a very different direction in the 1700s. For the Victorians, nothing better demonstrated your respectability than to go after a modest women.
