EPO is normally used for kidney diseases. It also prevents immature red blood cells called erythrocytes from something called apoptosis, which means programmed cell death. In professional athletes, in doping, the use of EPO is quite common with endurance athletes. The first test for EPO was done at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
