Consciousness Is Not All Mentality

We have this impression that consciousness is involved in everything, but it's actually a very, very small part of our overall mental processing. For example, you're not conscious of the sensation of the chair you're sitting in until you focus on it. Much of speech is a non-conscious process. The performance of musical instruments like playing the piano or the guitar is largely non-conscious. Even thinking and reasoning happens outside of our introspection, at least very often.
