The History of Prostitution in Sparta
Naira was brought to trial in Athens, accused of representing herself and her children as citizens. The maximum penalty Naira faced was being sold into slavery and having her property sold. In Sparta there were reputately sculptures within Sparta dedicated by a Hetira called Katuna. Prostitutes are looked at disprovingly for the commercial nature of the activity; greed is a running theme in Greek comedy. A young and pretty prostitute could earn more money than her older, less attractive colleagues. Contraceptive techniques used by the Greeks though, are not as well known as those employed by the Romans. It seems likely that porni had access to abortion or infanticide
