"Ex-black" is a famous locution that, yo declare yourself ex black. What does it mean to you? "It's obviously a sort of rhetorical provocation," he says. The idea of the one drop rule became a source of great pride and solidarity for African Americans. But this kinship was rooted in oppression; we can't really get beyond racism while clinging on to these categories which are inherently compromised by their basis and in slavery.
