Sedan chairs were first introduced to the UK in 16 34. They are a chair that one person sits on, and then is attached by pole railings. The rule was that pedestrians had to get out of the way as they went past. Men would shout 'by your leave' at people who didn't give way. There were also military sedan chairs for camp expeditions.
