The Death Gambit
Any seasoned sailor could take one look at the ship and see she was doomed to go under. If you breached, you'd face jail time because you probably didn't have the money to pay the fine. 19th century British jails were a death gambit too. There are accounts of ships being escorted by police boats out of harbor while sailors pleaded with them to please be arrested instead.
