The History of Kashmir

In 1903, King Hari Singh served as a page of honor to Lord Kursen at the Grand Delhi Darbar. He suggested that Indian princely states should be made independent of India in 1930. In 1947, after India gained independence, Kashmir could have joined India or Pakistan. The Maharaja wanted to play India and Pakistan off each other and get stuff from both of them. His king was so unpopular that his readings at the time when there were no polls was around minus 2%. There was an armed uprising against him in a place called Poonch supported by Pakistani militants. They reached out to India for help. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was ready to send troops.
