In nature, competition takes place at various levels. That takes place among individuals within groups. And that leads to monopoly like behaviors which are not good for the whole group. What's good for me can be bad for my family. What’s good for my clan can bebad for my nation. The pursuit of lower level interests robustly benefits the common good. All the global problems are based on lower level driving and nations trying to go their economies have led to all of these global problems. If we want to achieve global welfare, then we must select our practices with global welfare. It feels like a very difficult problem but i think part of your argument in the book is right.
