Confucianism and the State

Confucianism was famous for something that the legalists would not, I think, accept. That was the role of scholars in the government to remonstrate with the emperor. The Confucians always rejected the sort of legalist idea of vicarious punishment and these overly harsh punishments. So the Confucians were always trying to moderate the punishments.
