The Importance of Being Useful

A true idea is a good candidate, but not just any truth. It must seem useful to all those people who will be choosing whether to enact it or not. The ideas with the best chances surviving through many generations of change are truths with reach. For instance, Newton's laws are useful for building better cathedrals, but also for building better bridges and designing better artillery.
