Entrepreneurial C Feminism and the Shape of Transnational Marriages in China

Many of my respondents actually identify with this strand of Chinese feminism that the scholars Angela Wu and Dohmika have coined entrepreneurial C femme. This model encourages women to abandon traditional virtues such as submissiveness and self sacrifice, but it doesn't really associate female empowerment with participation in the paid labor force either. Instead, women are encouraged to capitalize on and cultivate their sexual attractiveness, including their femininity and domestic skills in order to maximize their material gain on the marriage market. So even when my respondents started working, many of them expected to keep any earnings they made as their private money while their Western husbands demanded that they chip in on household expenses.
