There's definitely the sense, especially on killing women of smaller spirits that taught or revealed knowledge to them. Many working books and grimwars in libraries of the cunning folk featured necromantic operation. One of the primary spiritual relationships for Mary Parrish was the spirit of a prisoner who she'd been in love with while they were in prison together. And we can also think of saints as spirit of the dead, of course.
