A study by the prestigious American Academy of Sleep Medicine asserts that meditation is an effective treatment for insomnia. In addition, a randomized controlled trial published in the peer reviewed journal of alternative and complementary medicine found that practicing daily yoga postures and meditation increased plasma melatonin levels over the course of the three month study.
