Musk is described at that point as very confident, very bright and extremely hard-working. But he also has an embrace of an impatient and underestimates how long things will take. So in 1999, he comes up with an online banking service called x.com. This merges with Confinity owned by Peter Thiel, who has become a different kind of tech super villain,. Yeah, let's go with that. This becomes PayPal, but the PayPal service, as we know it, wasn't Musk's idea. He then buys Compact for $307 million. And he has 22 million of that goes to him because he's got a 7% share. That's already doing quite well.
