Back then even a motherboard would only last maybe one or two generations of processors. Now, so much of that stuff is on the chip itself that we've gone even further in that direction. So there actually is a surprising amount of reengineering that has to happen to take advantage of all that. The market for upgradable components and more modular stuff like motherboards that you could just drop in a new chip is mostly gone.
