Einstein's Theory of Space

Einstein was able to kind of revolutionize that view of space. And I wonder if you or we know how that came about like, what was the thing that set him off in that direction? Was it basically observing what happens out there in nature that the speed of light doesn't change? And if you start from there, then you consider put together this idea that space time can bend and ripple. Well, there are many stages in Einstein's thinking.
