Tides of History

CHAPTER

The State and Gunpowder Warfare

Most of the things that come to define the state in the early modern period, most of them existed in the middle ages. And mean, li no mediaeval noble would have understood the idea of the state having a monopoly on violence. That was every noble's right to go out and bash some heads if he so chose. But overtime, the state kind of takes this upon itself,. Then we get this projection backwards into the middle ages of the idea that, while kings are supposed to have a monopoly on Violence, states are supposed to be responsible for it. It's really interesting. I'm thinking the wheels are turning in my head.
