The Trial of Thomas Weems

Thomas Weems' trial kicked off in the first week of August. Susanna Burt's testimony took the core of how she had seen Thomas Weems and Mary Ann resting in a field. Maria Woodward drove the nail home when she told the court how she had been seduced by Weems, who had told her that he was a single man. If this show of emotion had managed to garner any sort of sympathy from the jury, it was quickly destroyed when Robert Otteridge, the jailer gave his version of events. He said: "I got acquainted with a young woman named Maria Woodward. After being acquainted with her, I determined to marry her and to murder my wife"
