The Stigma Around Menstruation in Rural India
The stigma around periods is is long standing. It's thousands of years old. The phobia of menstration continues in parts of the world to day. Even, for example, in india, there is a widespread belief that if a woman or girl is menstruating, she shouldn't cook,. cause she will pollute the food. And also that she can rot pickles - which is quite astonishing when you consider that a pickle is a vegetable suspended in acid. But these are really widespread stigmas and taboos, and they have really nasty effects because sometimes they will stop women and girls being able to do what they want to do., says rose.
