How many people do you know? And how wide is your academic network? I think it's not as strong a predictor of success as in other disciplines. People like the higher people they know, or good like e to a kind of work that room no matter how smart you are. Academics aren't going to work on what charity does most good with your money. So if you want the state of the arcjust don't do that with in academia. But there's tons hove, like really good things as well.
