The Spartans came two days late. They wanted to look at the Persians, but they'd never seen them before. The Greeks had superior weaponry and were fighting amphibious troops. And more importantly, they used the geographical contours of marathon to protect their flanks. That's one reason why we know so much about the Persian wars.
