The Wagner Group: A Private Mercenary Company
Wagner group was set up in 2014 after Crimea was annexed by Russia. The idea of a paramilitary outfit not under the control of the Russian military was opposed by the FSB, says Peter Bergen. Wagner has been more efficacious and much more brutal than the Russian armed forces would be, he adds. It is largely responsible for conquering the strategic eastern city of Bakhmod in Ukraine - but its significance is contested.
