Tchaikovsky's Recapitulation of the Second Theme

Tchaikovsky lulls us into a sense of harmonic security, then slowly reveals to us that fundamental bleakness and hopelessness of the movement. At this point, the fate motif is returned over the top of the main theme, locking them together. The music becomes ever more impassioned and out of control, with the theme fragmenting into ever more complex and unstable rhythms. Tchaikovsky is extremely careful, even in this wild music, to calibrate the dynamics of the orchestra.
