Howe put into chesapeake bay, about 50 miles southwest of philadelphia. While howe let his men recuperate, the month at cea had been pretty awful. washington got his army marching south, picking up militia companies along the way,. until he commanded nearly 20 thousand men on the way to the confrontation with the british. The american army entered and then marched as smartly as they could through the streets ofphiladelphia. Washington tried to put on as good a show as he could, but even a casual observer could tell that these boys not step as lively nor look as sharp as a professional army ought to step and look.
