The Importance of Ritual

I was thinking a lot about ritual recently when I was preparing for that Huxley lecture because I was comparing Brave New World and Island. In Ireland which was all this is last novel, he designs it around various initiatory rites, rituals of change. And what I have found in groups is that any ritual you create at the first works wonderfully and then everybody figures out how to socialize it or go to sleep in the midst of it and have it not work. It's a ritual for people to move into a different relationship with other human beings. A grateful dead dance is a very deep, profound ritual. I think it's one of the longest lasting new religions in the society."
