The Haze Code
All Hollywood films had to obey the haze code for a 34 year period from the mid 30s to the mid 60s. Hitchcock always had to find these really innovative and careful ways around the haze code, but still smuggling all of the interesting dark, seedy, violent stuff that he wanted to smuggle in. The subtext is so screaming obvious, isn't it? It's just how you've looked at this for a long time. There's something, she wasn't anyone to you really. And even Joan Fontaine feels that, right? Yeah. She gets that there is something weird going on here as well.
