For Aristotle it is this set of capacities and it is because we also said that it's the form of the animal. So if you are just a sort of stationary oyster for example, you just have life or if you're a plant, you're just alive but have no locomotion. All of these things taken together are what make the animal what it is. But these distinctions obtain between men and women as well.
